POST-MORTEM REPORT ON DEATH OF NSHOGI ADULT FEMALE GORILLA IS OUT

POST-MORTEM REPORT ON DEATH OF NSHOGI ADULT FEMALE GORILLA IS OUTPOST-MORTEM REPORT ON DEATH OF NSHOGI ADULT FEMALE GORILLA IS OUT

A post-mortem medical report from the vet doctors who picked up Nkuhene’s carcass indicate that she passed on as a result of excessive trauma which led to excessive bleeding leading to probable Cardiovascular (heart) failure.
Nkuhene was an adult female gorilla of Nshongi group. The death resulted from a fight between Nshongi group and a suspected wild group although it was highly suspected that the fight was between the splinter Mishaya group and the main Nshongi group (BINP) on Sunday evening June 19th. The carcass was located in the morning of July 20th.
The Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project (MGVP) Field Vet Resident in BINP Dr. Fred Nizeyimana has released the post-mortem report says there was bleeding on the head due to bite wounds, bruises throughout the muscle layer; mass at the right temple consisting of soft yellow tissue.
Multiple,  severe lacerations on the back and deep puncture wound on the left bicep. Two puncture wounds on right biceps and deep puncture wounds on left wrist were also observed.
It is also believed that the two dominant silver backs each grabbed Nkuhene and tried to flee with her. The adult female was hence caught in the cross fire which ended her life.
The death of Nkuhene leaves Bakunzi and Mwiza as the only adult female gorillas in the new Mishaya group.
